Superplastic alumina ceramics

[China Aluminum Industry Network] Alumina ceramics are widely used as abrasives, cutting materials, and high temperature materials. They are also used for various mechanical parts because they have good abrasion resistance, mechanical strength, hardness, and wear resistance. However, due to the lack of plasticity, the original alumina ceramic cannot be processed like a metal material, and it can be said to be a material that is difficult to process.
Recently, the Institute of Metal Materials of the Japan Science and Technology Agency has developed a highly-plasticized alumina ceramic that can be precisely machined. According to reports, this ceramic is to disperse AI2O3 and Zr2O3 particles in an electrolyte aqueous solution in a polymer to prepare a slurry, inject it into a porous mold, press it into a billet, and heat and sinter. Because it is a kind of alumina sintered body containing Zr2O3, Zr2O3 alumina particles are in a highly dispersed state, and the crystals are fine particles with good superplasticity. It was determined that a tensile test was conducted at 1400° C. and 1500° C. at a speed of 1 mm/min, and its measured value exceeded 200%. Because it compensates for the lack of plasticity of the original alumina ceramic, its use has been further broadened.
